It is out: Apple iOS 5 (and more) Download now

It's Out: Apple iOS 5 (and More) Downloadable NowApple

Yes, iOS 5 is out, and you can now grab it, if you are an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone user with a copy of iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC. If you do not iTunes 5 still (published last night), you need to grab a copy of it first.

My iPhone 4 version size according to iTunes, 781.9 MB, whereas the iPad version (provided by the Techland Jared Newman) sees only 700.3 MB. I'm not sure why there are such significant differences, but I would estimate that it has to do, what the iPad packaging was already, logic-wise, contrasted with the iPhone 4.

(More: Apple: iOS 5, iCloud both start October 12)

If you are a Mac user, you will also discover, a lion recovery update (it fixes a problem "Find my Mac") and 10.7.2 both of OS X software update are MacOS X tool, the latter with "iCloud support", and "Support", by Apple means that you see an iCloud Setup Panel after you complete the update. 10.7.2 also adds Safari 5.1.1 and a number of browser updates. The combined update sizes for those significant clocking in 1.24 GB two, however, is. And Apple's get hammered because my Downloader currently says, that I will be the production Bell waiting for at least 12 hours.

iOS 5 adds some 200 new features, according to Apple, the most notable including a uniform notification Center, so-called Imessage\r, the iOS-based devices chat via Wi-Fi or cellular networks, a new newsstand Bookshelf-like view of newspapers and magazines, which purchased from the app store, stricter Twitter integration, improved tasks (and memories), app, have advanced photo editing, a few Safari photograph a more precise tweaks, browsing / reading and - last but not least - "Independence for all iOS devices." Yes, 5 makes it possible iOS it, everything in the air and kiss cable (on a Mac or PC) to do tethering farewell.

iCloud plugs directly into this equation, replaces me Apple mobile service and enables wireless synchronization of e-Mail, contacts, calendar, bookmarks, notes, task lists, and more.

I'll be back in a little with hands-on impressions, be if my first one, my download bar, watching the minutes completion slowly increase would have to "giant sized ultra-anticipated updates type suck."

University iTunes download record

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
3 October 2011 Last updated at 16:42 GMT By Sean Coughlan BBC News education correspondent iPad Mobile devices are driving a surge in downloading lectures from universities The Open University has become a global leader in the number of downloads on the iTunes U service, which allows students to download free video and audio recordings of lectures.

The Open University has reached 40 million downloads - with the increase driven by mobile devices such as iPads.

Figures from Apple suggest this puts the Open University alongside Stanford University for the most downloads.

The OU said it showed people wanted to be able to "study on the move".

Launched four years ago, the iTunes U online service is now running at the rate of 300 million downloads a year, with 350,000 lectures offered by more than 1,000 universities around the world.

It works as a parallel non-charging university version of the commercial iTunes service for selling music and films. It allows students and anyone else to access high-quality materials from some of the world's top academics and institutions.

It has its own top 10 chart - with the current list including lectures and course materials from Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and Nasa's space academy. The Open University is at number two with "English grammar in context".

The Open University, with its background in distance learning, has become a major global provider, outstripping many leading US universities.

About half of the universities using iTunes U allow anyone to use their materials, not just their own students. This includes the Open University - and 90% of its downloads are from outside the UK.

Beginners' French and Beginners' Chinese were the two most popular downloads from the Open University in the past 12 months.

There is no official league table of university download totals, but Apple says that other highly popular providers are Oxford, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley and South Florida.

Oxford has reported that it has reached 10 million downloads - running at about 130,000 per week. More than half of the people using these free materials are in the US or China.

Stanford and the Open University have both now reported 40 million downloads.

The Open University has doubled its downloads in a year. It says that this surge has been driven by new mobile platforms, such as smartphones and the wave of tablet devices.

Figures from this summer show that almost one in five of the Open University's iTunes U visits are now from iPad users.

The university's vice-chancellor, Martin Bean, said the increase in the use of such mobile devices could be seen as "the post personal computing stage" of the online service.

"It is crucial for part-time students to be able to study when, where and how it suits them and we excel at finding new and better ways to enable students to study on the move," he said.

Drive-by Download Attack on Facebook Used Malicious Ads

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Antivirus vendor Trend Micro has recently detected a drive-by download attack on Facebook that used malicious advertisements to infect users with malware.

"We encountered an infection chain, wherein the user is led from a page within Facebook to a couple of ad sites, and then finally to a page that hosts exploits," the company's security researchers warned Tuesday. "When we traced the connection between the ad sites and Facebook, we found that the ad providers were affiliated with a certain Facebook application. We checked on the said app, and found that it is indeed, ad-supported."

"Malvertising" attacks are usually the result of lax background screening practices on behalf of advertising networks or ad sale teams. Attackers usually impersonate legitimate advertisers in order to get their ads approved and later swap them with malicious code.

A lot of popular websites and big ad networks have fallen victim to such attacks over the years. Facebook also dealt with this form of abuse in the past, but in those cases the ads were used to display fake security alerts that led to scareware.

However, malvertisements that bundle drive-by download exploits for vulnerabilities in popular browser plug-ins, or even the browser itself, are much more dangerous since they don't require any user interaction.

In this case, users were directed to a page that loaded Java and ActiveX exploits, but while the attacked ActiveX vulnerability was patched in 2006, the Java ones were more recent, dating from 2010.

Facebook is usually plagued by other types of attacks. Trend Micro's research identified the three most common threats on Facebook: "likejacking," where users are tricked into posting a status update for a page they didn't actually intend to give a "like" to, rogue applications, and spam campaigns.

Unfortunately, the design of Facebook's platform, where thousands of third-party app developers can work with whichever advertisers they wish, favors malvertising. There's not much Facebook can do about it, so the task of fending off such attacks ultimately falls with the users.

Statistics collected this year by security companies from live drive-by download toolkit installations show that Java exploits have the highest success rate, exceeding those of PDF or Flash exploits.

This is mainly because users do a poor job of updating the software, a lot of them not even knowing what Java is or that it's installed on their systems. In fact, since there's little Java content on the Web anymore, some security experts recommend that users should disable the plug-in from their browser if they don't remember ever using it.

Keeping all software programs up to date, especially those that are accessible from the Web, is critically important for staying secure on the Internet. So is using an antivirus program capable of scanning Web traffic and detecting exploits.

Power users can resort to more advanced methods of protection such as the NoScript Firefox extension, which thanks to its opt-in approach to third-party scripts, blocks the majority of drive-by downloads, including those executed through malvertising.
