Verizon Wireless: Smartphone Sales Up, iPhone Sales Down in Q3

Everyone may be talking about Apple's iPhone 4S right now, but Android may be the mobile OS that is actually taking over America, with Verizon Wireless reporting that half of the smartphones it has sold in the last quarter use the Google operating system.

Verizon announced sales of 5.6 million smartphones in Q3 2011, with only 2 million of those iPhones, Apple's poorest showing in more than a year; it's believed that that may be down to people waiting for the release of the 4S, something potentially proven with the news that, as of Tuesday, iPhone sales for Verizon had already topped 1 million. (Interestingly, the company activated 2.7 million iPhones during the period; the difference comes from customers migrating from other carriers).

Verizon's Q3 profit doubled as a result of the smartphone demand, with subscriber growth during the quarter edging out that of rival AT&T. More than 882,000 new subscribers signed up in the period between July and September, up from 584,000 in the same period of 2010.

Instead of a Samsung Exynos processor, the phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 is 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. It supports also near field communication (NFC) for mobile payments, in contrast to the Sprint version, the epic touch 4 G. (the AT & T version supports NFC, however). This is very good news such as Google of its NFC app just Google Wallet.
We saw the T-Mobile Galaxy S short on the US-Galaxy-S II event in New York in August to start II, but we were not allowed to touch it. The phone has the same size Super AMOLED plus shows as the epic touch 4 G-4, 52 customs - and seems more laps, as the two other versions.
The Galaxy S II runs under Android 2.3.5 with custom overlay of Samsung TouchWiz 4.0, about it. The Galaxy S II costs $229.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate card and requires a two-year contract.
HTC surprise 4 G
HTC surprised the Galaxy S 4GWhile II is certainly an exciting addition to the line-up, I am more excited about the HTC 4 G amaze. The 4 G amaze is a camera-oriented phone, which has about an 8-megapixel back-illuminated sensor and a wide range of shooting modes.
Camera phone HTC and T-Mobile teamed up on the last was the T-Mobile MyTouch 4 G slide, we had declared the best camera on a Smartphone to date. How the MyTouch 4 G slide, the 4 G 1080p HD video capture, amaze a HDR shooting, a panorama mode, and claims zero shutter lag.
The amaze S3 processor as the Galaxy S II has the same Qualcomm and runs Android 2.3.4. T-Mobile the amaze says HTC also runs through the gingerbread OS 4 G, but I suspect that we will see a similar camera user interface as the MyTouch 4 G slide used, that is not on other phones HTC sense.
The amaze is a super qHD has 4.3-Zoll-LCD-Display and also NFC support. Kudos to T-Mobile for sending not one but two telephones with NFC right in time with the launch of Google Wallet to support.
The HTC 4 G amaze costs $260 to a $50 mail-in rebate card with a two year contract from T-Mobile.

The Sonic 4 G can up to five enabled Wi-Fi devices, such as connect laptop, iPad, camera, etc.. Manufactured by Huawei, the Sonic weighs only 3.88 grams and is equipped with SD card slot that expandable memory can contain up to 32 GB. It has also a small OLED display, shows signal strength, number of devices connected, the number of unread text messages, connect to the Internet, battery level, and network connection type.
In October, the Sonic is available online and T-Mobile retail, but price was not announced.

TECHNOLOGY, KDDI Accelerates Smartphone Shift, Stays Mum on IPhone

KDDI, Japan's second-largest mobile operator, on Monday announced a new range of smartphones, accompanying services, and a low-cost pricing plan, but stayed mum on whether it would offer Apple's new iPhone next year.
The Tokyo-based company, which runs the "au" mobile network, has been slower than its competitors to introduce advanced phones, and has seen its share of new subscribers fall as a result. Its lead over Softbank, the third largest operator, has dwindled as the upstart operator piled on contracts through its low-cost plans and exclusive sales of Apple's iPhone and iPad line on its network.
KDDI President Takashi Tanaka repeatedly declined to comment on local news reports that his company would soon offer the iPhone on its own network, but he said KDDI would accelerate its shift into smartphones that offer high-speed Internet through its WiMax service, a high-speed, long-range wireless Internet technology. KDDI had success with the previous generation of phones by offering designer brands and other features, and has lagged domestic rivals in moving to higher-specification models.
"In a few years, our share of traditional phones will be barely 30 percent, perhaps 20 percent. Once our customers try using the Internet with smartphones they can't really go back," Tanaka told reporters at a press conference in central Tokyo.
The new lineup includes the HTC EVO 3D and Motorola Photon, also available internationally, plus several handsets from local manufacturers like Fujitsu and Sharp that have technologies aimed at the Japanese market. Fujitsu's Arrows Z phone has a special interface for entering Japanese characters drawn by hand on the touchscreen, while a smartphone from Sharp's Aquos line is equipped with a sub-screen that lets users check the time and operate its music player without turning on the main display and draining battery life.
Tanaka also announced a new pricing plan that gives users unlimited free calls at certain times on the au network for 980 yen (US$13) per month. The plan is almost identical to one that Softbank has been offering for years.
KDDI's subscriber lead over its rival has steadily diminished in recent years. In June, 2008, the month Softbank began selling the original iPhone, KDDI had about 30 million subscribers to Softbank's 19 million, while at the end of last month it had 33.5 million to Softbank's 26.6 million, according to data from Japan's Telecommunications Carriers Association. NTT DoCoMo remains the number one operator with about 58.8 million subscribers.
KDDI is also emphasizing services on its high-speed WiMax network. On Monday it announced video calls over Skype would be available on a specially designed application, as well as a service to automatically save pictures taken with phones online and deliver them to computers through a tie-up with Eye-Fi, the maker of wireless-enabled memory cards.
The new phones and services will be available by the end of this year.

ZTE Launches First Smartphone in the US Through Cricket

Mobile carrier Cricket announced on Thursday it will start selling the ZTE Score, the first smartphone from Chinese telecommunications equipment supplier ZTE to launch in the U.S.

The smartphone uses Android 2.3 and comes with a 600 MHz processor. It also features a 3.5 inch touch screen, with a 3.2 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi access.

Cricket, a U.S. mobile operator that offers monthly plans without contracts, said the phone will be available on Sept. 25 in Best Buy locations across the country. The phone is being sold for a suggested retail price of US$130.

ZTE, which also manufactures mobile handsets and tablets, has been looking to increase its presence in the U.S. market, and announced earlier this year it would launch its first smartphone in the country. The company previously launched a lower-end handset called the Salute in a tie-up with Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile operator in the U.S.

In comparison, Cricket is a small operator with 5.7 million customers. ZTE Score comes with the Cricket's Muve Music service, which allows for unlimited music downloads from different major record labels.

ZTE is launching the new phone as the company has seen sales of its handsets increase globally. It is currently the fifth largest mobile phone vendor in the world, placing it right behind Apple, according to research firm IDC. In the second quarter, ZTE's mobile phone shipments increased year-over-year by 36 percent.
