ARM chip promises cheaper phones

19 October 2011 Last updated at 20:32 GMT Phone and tablet ARM's chip designs are used in more than 90% of the world's smartphones. UK chip designer ARM has unveiled a new processor, which should allow manufacturers to make cheaper smartphones.

The company hopes the Cortex A7 will enable a mobile computing revolution in developing countries where current technologies are often unaffordable.

Consumers in developed countries should also see a benefit.

The ultra-efficient chip can be paired with more powerful processors in a "hybrid" model to reduce power use.

ARM's designs are used in approximately 95% of the world's smartphones.

A range of big name manufacturers have already signed-up to use the A7 processor along with the company's "big.LITTLE" architecture.

Samsung, LG, NVidia and Texas Instruments were among those to throw their weight behind the technology.

Apple is also known to make use of ARM-designed chips in its mobile devices, although it has historically been reluctant to say so publicly.

Smaller and cheaper

Used as the sole processor in a smartphone, the A7 is said to offer comparable power to current chips at a fraction of the price, while consuming much less battery power.

Its silicon core is only one-fifth of the size of existing technologies, allowing a reduced production price, according to ARM chief executive Warren East.

"You typically make chips on a silicon wafer and it costs roughly the same amount of money for each wafer. If you can get 2,000 devices on a wafer or 1,000 devices on a wafer it makes a huge difference to the cost per device," he told BBC News.

"We can see the developed world moving on and mobile being the nexus for all sort of consumer electronics. In the Bric countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) we are seeing catch-up.

"As we look forward these smartphones are going to be totally ubiquitous and in the much less developed areas, such as Africa, you will see smartphones becoming tools that people use to make their lives easier."

Mr East said that the trend would happen regardless of intervention, but cheaper devices would greatly accelerate that, enabling smartphones to be produced for under $100 (£60) by 2013 or 2014.

Little and large

In countries where price is less of an issue, the Cortex A7 may be combined with high end mobile processors to offer a powerful, yet energy-efficient package, ARM said.

For less demanding tasks such as checking in the background for email and social networking updates, the A7 processor would handle the work.

Using a technology known as big.LITTLE, the phone would instantly switch over to chips such as the Cortex-A15 when more horsepower was needed.

"It's not just trying to solve the issue of doing yet another CPU with higher performance," said Avner Goren, general manager of Omap strategy at Texas Instruments, one of ARM's clients.

"I don't need massive processing all the time, I need it only some of the time, and for the rest I can use A7. This allows me now to continue the path to more and more powerful devices but without sacrificing battery life."

Although ARM currently enjoys a dominant position in the smartphone and tablet markets, the Cambridge-based firm is facing the prospect of stiff competition from Intel, which plans to enter the mobile processor business.

Its forthcoming Medfield and Clover Trail processors are aimed at the smartphone and tablet markets.

TECHNOLOGY, T-Mobile Phones to Run on Speedy Network

The first two smartphones to run on T-Mobile's fast HSPA+42 network are coming soon, the operator announced Monday.
The HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S II will be the first from T-Mobile capable of download speeds around 8 Mbps (bits per second) or as fast as 20 Mbps depending on availability and network load.
Both phones are expected to become available on T-Mobile's website starting Oct. 10.
T-Mobile USA Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman announced the devices at the Mobilize conference in San Francisco. He indicated that T-Mobile will not get the Apple iPhone if the next version of that device is unveiled next month as expected.
"To my knowledge, not in October," Brodman said, when asked if T-Mobile would get the iPhone. T-Mobile does want the iPhone and has talked to Apple about it, he said.
Asked about the pending acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T, Brodman said he believes the deal will go through but that T-Mobile customers will win either way.
The Amaze, which will cost a pricey US$260 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with a two-year service agreement, includes an 8-megapixel camera and 1080p HD video recorder. It features other advanced camera features including "zero shutter lag," a dual LED flash and SmartShot, a technology that takes five pictures and creates the best shot from them.
The Amaze runs Android 2.3.4 and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 Processor with a 1.5 GHz dual core CPU.
The Samsung Galaxy S II has the same processor, runs Android 2.3.5 and also comes NFC-enabled. It will cost $230 after a $50 mail-in rebate card and a two-year service agreement.
"We have the fastest Galaxy in the universe," Brodman said at Mobilize.
T-Mobile also announced the Sonic 4G Mobile HotSpot, which works on the HSPA+42 network. Made by Huawei, it lets a user share the network access via Wi-Fi with up to five other devices. The mobile hotspot has an SD card slot for expandable memory and a display that shows signal strength and number of devices connected. T-Mobile did not offer pricing for the hotspot, which is expected to be available in October in stores and online.

TECHNOLOGY, Android Users: Here's Some Advice to Protect Your Phones

Android smartphone users can take some common sense precautions to protect their personal data from being stolen -- important advice considering an app developer purports to know how to take the information in under 60 seconds.
Loredana Botezatu of BitDefender, a cybersecurity software maker, recommends:
Never lose sight of your smartphone in public.Keep a close eye on what a person is doing with your phone if you lend it to someone.Install mobile anti-malware software on your phone.Don't store job-related information on your phone unless it's encrypted.
The advice comes as a gray hat app developer has released into the wild five tools purportedly for "study purposes" that can clean out all the data on an Android smartphone in less than a minute.
Based on information from virus researchers at BitDefender, here's how the tools work.
When any of the apps is loaded on a victim's phone, they can be activated remotely by a cyber thief. Once activated, it sends a five digit pass code to the phone's intruder and secretly uploads the device's contacts, messages, recent calls, and browser history into the developer's space in the Android Cloud. After copying the data from the phone, the apps uninstall themselves so a target won't know they were even on their mobile.
To obtain data sucked from a phone, a Net crook need only travel to the developer's cloud location, enter the five-digit code generated by their copy of the app and for $5 they can download all the data nicked by the sinister software.
In an ironic twist, the developer has posted a notice at their site informing users of the apps that if they don't pay for the data they've stolen within 24 hours of the theft, all the information will be erased from the site "out of respect and for security reasons." "[N]eedless to say...this statement is by no means to be trusted," Botezatu cautions.
This latest attack on Android phones is just one of many this year. In fact, the phones are seen as a ripe target for mobile miscreants. According to a report released by a cybersecurity software maker in August, attacks on Android by malware writers jumped 76 percent over the previous three months, making it the most assaulted mobile operating system on the planet.
Some of that malware has been devilishly clever. For example, a bad app called Soundminer listens to conversations on an Android phone and is able to recognize when a credit card is spoken. After identifying such a number, it snips it from the conversation it has been recording and sends it to a Web baddie.
While cyber sorties like these may give some smartphone buyers pause before picking up an Android mobile, some commentators believe the benefits of an open system like Android outweigh those of systems with less openness and less vulnerability to attack. "Threats are everywhere," JR Raphael wrote in PC World. "The answer isn't locking down the world; it's taking basic precautions."
"With freedom of choice comes a small level of responsibility -- and whether we're talking about the Web or talking about our smartphones, the tradeoff is almost always worth it in the end," he added.
