Cinq Brings an Extra Screen to Laptops for $249

Once you've got a dual-monitor setup at your desk, it's hard to go back to single-screen computing. In other words, using a laptop, with its one measly screen, stinks.

Fortunately, Sideline is on the case with its Cinq companion monitor, a portable secondary screen that clips to any laptop and runs on USB power, using DisplayLink. Although it's not the first USB-powered screen on the market, it's the first one I've seen that attaches to the laptop itself by a set of rails and a clamp. Once attached, the Cinq can swivel around and switch between horizontal and vertical orientation.

The Cinq's LED-backlit screen measures 10.1 inches with 720p resolution, and weighs 15 ounces. It has a response time of 16 ms, and viewing angles of 45 degrees on either side. The Cinq software is compatible with Windows and Mac, and it includes a built-in SD card reader, just in case your laptop doesn't have one for some reason.

One thing Sideline isn't talking about is the screen's effect on your computer's battery life. Obviously, it'll vary by laptop, but don't expect to get as much juice as you did without a second screen in tow.

Although Cinq's product page still says its in pre-order, Slashgear reports that the Cinq is now shipping. I've e-mailed Cinq support to try and get a firm answer. (UPDATE: Ben Nickey, Sideline's CEO, told Techland that the Cinq will be shipping in roughly three weeks. As for battery life, he said his MacBook Pro ran for about four hours with one Cinq attached, and about 2.5 hours with two extra screens, compared to about six hours without them. Video and other power-intensive tasks will drain the battery faster.)

Bangladesh unveils $130 laptops

11 October 2011 Last updated at 14:55 GMT By Anbarasan Ethirajan BBC News, Dhaka Critics say that poor internet connectivity may affect the usefulness of the laptops Bangladesh has unveiled a domestically made laptop which officials claim is one of the cheapest in the world.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the computer, named Doel, at a ceremony in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday. It is the first laptop made in the country.

The state-owned telecoms company Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) is producing four models of the laptop.

The most basic one is priced at 10,000 taka ($130/£83). The primary model runs the android operating system.

"This is a big step towards building a digital Bangladesh. When villages get laptops at a cheaper price they will be connected to the internet and that will bring lots of benefits," TSS managing director Mohammad Ismail told the BBC.

Initially, the laptop will be distributed to various government departments. But later on they will be made available to the public and to tens of millions of students.

Mr Ismail said that at the moment Bangladesh is producing 10% of the components for the laptop and the rest are imported.

"But within six months we will be able to produce 60% of the components," he said.

However, the country's internet connectivity remains poor and critics have raised doubts whether the distribution of laptops alone will help the country to connect digitally.

The government has launched an ambitious plan, known as Digital Bangladesh, with the aim of digitally connecting the country by 2021.

"Every part of the country will be brought under e-governance, while the telecommunication system is being modernised to cut the digital divide," Sheikh Hasina said during the inauguration.

TECHNOLOGY, Asus Ultrabook Laptops to Launch October 11

Asus's UX Ultrabook, the first in this new class of laptops, to be introduced now has a firm announcement date: October 11.
Way back in May, the Asus UX Ultrabook was held up as a prototype of a new class of thin and light laptops that would challenge the MacBook Air and redefine Windows laptops. Well, get ready, because the influx is about to start.
Asus now has a single splash page up on its Ultrabook site, simply declaring that “the real Ultrabook” will arrive soon. Presumably at a New York City press event, Asus will show off and announce availability of the UX21, the 11.6-inch model originally demoed with Intel at the spring Computex tech show in Taiwan with Intel, A 13.3-inch model, the UX31, also was shown. But wait, there’s probably more. Last month, we also heard several reports that Asus would be introducing not just one or two Ultrabooks, but possibly five, six, or seven models, with prices expected to range between $799 and $1999.
Unless Acer has a surprise up its sleeves and will be springing its Aspire 3951 Ultrabook on us soon, as earlier reports suggest, the Asus UX Ultrabooks may be the first of this class of ultraportable laptops you’ll be able to own.
Other than Sandy Bridge Core i5 or i7 processors, a thickness under 0.7 inches, and a weight under 3 pounds, we won’t really know for sure until October 11 if there will be any major surprises with these UX Ultrabooks. But, given how much Asus (and Intel) have invested in the project, I like to think our patience will be rewarded.

Sony said on Tuesday that it sold a display system for their VAIO Laptops, which allows users to 3D movies and pictures without glasses.
Area clear comes in two models for the S-series and format C Vaios, which went on sale this year, and works with Blu-ray movies as digital images in the MPO or multi image,.
It is spokeswoman Noriko Shoji on sale in Japan and Europe in October with no release date for the United States, according to Sony set.
The screen has a price in Japan from 13,000 yen (US$ 171).
