Verizon Wireless: Smartphone Sales Up, iPhone Sales Down in Q3

Everyone may be talking about Apple's iPhone 4S right now, but Android may be the mobile OS that is actually taking over America, with Verizon Wireless reporting that half of the smartphones it has sold in the last quarter use the Google operating system.

Verizon announced sales of 5.6 million smartphones in Q3 2011, with only 2 million of those iPhones, Apple's poorest showing in more than a year; it's believed that that may be down to people waiting for the release of the 4S, something potentially proven with the news that, as of Tuesday, iPhone sales for Verizon had already topped 1 million. (Interestingly, the company activated 2.7 million iPhones during the period; the difference comes from customers migrating from other carriers).

Verizon's Q3 profit doubled as a result of the smartphone demand, with subscriber growth during the quarter edging out that of rival AT&T. More than 882,000 new subscribers signed up in the period between July and September, up from 584,000 in the same period of 2010.

Verizon Wireless users to sell Web habits

Bad news for privacy of Paranoids: Verizon Wireless is the monitoring of the Web-browsing habits of customers, and plans to sell the data in aggregate.

Verizon setback of dividends for Vodafone: FT

London (Reuters)-Verizon Communications (VZ.N) has dashed the hopes of Vodafone (VOD.L) investors, excluding a return to a recurring dividend mobile phone joint venture the two companies, called Verizon Wireless, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

In an interview with the newspaper on Monday, Lowell McAdam, new CEO of Verizon Communications, said that it was not possible to have an annual dividend payment policy for Verizon Wireless, because the leading mobile operator in the U.S. may need to buy rival companies or purchase spectrum.

McAdam said that Verizon Communications, the American telecommunications company and Vodafone, the mobile group of the United Kingdom, were working closely together on several other projects not specified.

He also told the FT that it would be wrong to exclude the possibility of Verizon Communications and Vodafone merger in the future, although he suggested that it would not happen in the short and medium term.

Reuters does not immediately reach Verizon Communications or Vodafone to comment.
