LOS ANGELES (Reuters)-NBC News Twitter feed was cut on Friday by a group who claimed that a plane hijacked, in a fresh attack, dropped to the site where the twin towers were destroyed in New York on September 11 attacks for 10 years.
The hoax by a group called The Script Kiddies came just two days before the United States marks the tenth anniversary of the 2001 attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.
"The twitter account was hacked Today and NBC News as a result, they were sent false reports of an attack by air at ground zero to followers of @ NBCNews," NBC said in a statement.
The network "we are working with Twitter to correct the situation and apologize to the scare that could have been caused by an act so reckless and irresponsible," he added.
The Twitter account was later suspended, but according to screenshots of fake tweets, three messages were sent in rapid succession.
"Breaking News! Only Ground Zero has been attacked. 5736 flight has crashed into the site, suspicion of kidnapping. more as the story develops, "read the first. Script Kiddies claimed responsibility in a tweet later.
New York and Washington DC are already on high alert in response to a credible threat but not confirmed a conspiracy of al Qaeda for targeting the cities on the anniversary of the downing of the World Trade Center towers by hijacked planes.
The cut of NBC News Twitter account was met with instant condemnation. The business Insider called it a joke of 9/11 "disgusting", while Washington Post blogger Melissa Bell said tweets seemed "particularly shocking and cruel".
